The gap that doesn't make sense
Every competitive archer knows this experience. You shoot 287 at practice on a Wednesday. You shoot 278 at a tournament on Saturday. The equipment is the same. The distance is the same. The target face is the same. You shot it four days ago. Something is different — but it is not the bow.
The gap between practice scores and competition scores is one of the most consistent phenomena in competitive archery. Research on elite archers confirms what shooters already know: competition and training are psychologically different environments, and heightened arousal in competition consistently produces performance below training level. The gap is not a mystery. It is a predictable result of a set of mental conditions that most archers never deliberately train for.
The mechanical skills required to shoot a 290 are the same skills required to shoot a 290 under pressure. What changes is the mental environment surrounding those skills — and whether that environment helps them run or disrupts them. The mental game is not a soft add-on to the technical game. It is the layer that determines whether the technical skills you built in practice are available when it counts.
This article is a map of that layer. What the mental game is made of. Why it breaks down. And what you can actually do about it in practice, before you ever show up to a tournament.
What competition actually does to you
The mechanism is not complicated. Competition raises arousal — the body's physiological response to perceived stakes. Heart rate increases. Attention narrows. Muscle tension rises. This is the same mechanism that makes a car swerve and your foot find the brake before you've consciously registered the hazard. It is old wiring, and it does not care that you are at a Vegas Shoot instead of facing a predator.
Some arousal is useful. The inverted-U model of performance — sometimes called the Yerkes-Dodson law — describes the well-documented relationship between arousal and performance: too little arousal (you're flat, you don't care, you're going through the motions) produces worse performance than optimal arousal; but too much arousal (you're wired, your hands are tight, you're scanning for threats) also produces worse performance than optimal. Every archer has an individual arousal sweet spot where they perform best, and competition reliably pushes most archers past it.
The specific mechanism by which over-arousal degrades precision is well understood. High arousal directs conscious attention inward — toward your own mechanics, your own body, the question of whether you are going to execute correctly. This is internal focus, and it disrupts automated motor skills. The same shot you have fired ten thousand times in practice starts to feel foreign because conscious attention is now supervising a process that normally runs below conscious level. You think about your release. You start to feel your grip pressure. You notice your pin is moving and you wonder why. The shot you want is the shot you stop monitoring. The moment you turn on the inspector, the process gets worse.
Choking is not a character flaw. It is a specific, well-documented mechanism: elevated arousal produces conscious monitoring of automated motor skills, which disrupts their execution. Understanding the mechanism is the first step to building a defense against it.
Where your attention actually goes — and where it should
Decades of motor learning research have established a clear finding: external focus of attention produces better motor performance than internal focus. This has been confirmed specifically in archery research. Archers who direct their attention outward — toward the target, the dot, the process goal — consistently outperform archers who direct their attention inward toward their own body mechanics.
The explanation is called the constrained action hypothesis. When you focus internally on what your body is doing, the conscious system takes over regulation of movements that are normally handled automatically by the motor system. Conscious control of fine motor skills is slower, less efficient, and less accurate than automatic control. You are essentially inserting a slow, clumsy override into a fast, precise process.
Internal focus — disrupts automation
"What is my finger doing?" · "Am I gripping too tight?" · "Why is my pin moving so much?" · "Make sure I don't punch it" · "Is my elbow high enough?"
External focus — preserves automation
"Keep the dot on the X" · "Pull through the shot" · "Stay in it until the arrow hits" · "Let the shot happen" · "Settle and hold"
Notice the difference. Internal focus describes body parts and mechanics. External focus describes goals and process outcomes. The research distinction is not between thinking and not thinking — it is between what you are thinking about. An archer thinking "stay on the X" is externally focused. An archer thinking "don't move my bow arm" is internally focused, even though both are ostensibly thinking about the shot.
In practice, the pre-shot routine is the mechanism that holds external focus in place. A well-built routine occupies the conscious channel with a sequence of process cues — each one external or process-oriented — so there is no mental vacancy for the inspector to fill. The inspector fills vacancies. Give it nowhere to go.
Arousal control — the dial you can actually adjust
You cannot turn off competition arousal. You can learn to manage where it lands on the dial.
The first tool is recognition. Most archers who perform poorly under pressure have never specifically identified what their optimal arousal state feels like physically. They have only experienced the state as "I felt good" or "I felt off." Developing a concrete, physical description of your optimal state — what your breathing rate is, what your grip pressure feels like, how much your hands feel, what your jaw is doing — gives you something to check against and return to. You cannot navigate back to a place you have never mapped.
The second tool is controlled breathing. This is not a metaphor. Slow, diaphragmatic breathing with an extended exhale directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system and measurably reduces heart rate and cortisol within one to two minutes. Elite archers across multiple studies use intentional breathing between ends as an arousal regulation strategy. The mechanism works. Three to five slow breaths before an end — inhale four counts, exhale six — is not a ritual. It is physiology.
The third tool is acceptance. Research on emotion regulation in elite archers specifically finds that cognitive reappraisal strategies — actively trying to tell yourself the pressure doesn't matter, that it's just practice, that you're not nervous — become less effective over the course of a long round. They require mental effort, and that effort competes with the attention the shot needs. Acceptance strategies, where the archer acknowledges the pressure without trying to suppress or reframe it, consistently outperform suppression under sustained competition conditions. I notice I am nervous. That is fine. I have shot this shot before. Then shoot it.
The pre-shot routine — your portable environment
The pre-shot routine is the single most important mental tool in competitive archery. Not because it is calming. Because it is consistent.
Competition changes the environment around you. The range, the audience, the score, the stakes — all of it is different from Wednesday practice. The pre-shot routine is the one thing you bring to competition that is identical to Wednesday practice. If you build it deliberately and run it identically on every arrow in every session, you arrive at competition with a small portable environment that is familiar — a few seconds of exactly the same sequence that your nervous system has fired ten thousand times before. That familiarity is stabilizing in a way that nothing else is.
The effective pre-shot routine for compound archery has a few non-negotiable properties:
It is always the same length. Not always the same clock time — but the same number of steps, the same sequence, the same checkpoints on every arrow. An archer who sometimes skips steps when they feel confident and sometimes adds extra steps when they feel uncertain is training a variable routine, which means they have no routine. The value of the routine is its consistency, not its content.
It runs on process cues, not outcome cues. The routine does not include "make sure I score a 10." It includes "settle the dot, pull through, hold position." Outcome cues invite the inspector. Process cues keep it out.
It contains a defined start. Elite archers in competition research consistently report a specific trigger that starts the routine — a breath, a step into position, a grip of the bow. The trigger is the gate. Before the trigger: neutral, recovering from the last arrow. After the trigger: the routine runs, and nothing else is allowed in. The trigger is the line between between-arrow thinking and on-arrow execution.
It is practiced as a unit. Not the parts of it in isolation — the whole thing, from trigger to follow-through, in the order and at the pace it will run in competition. An archer who can describe their routine but has never actually run it under pressure as a complete sequence does not have a routine. They have a list.
Between arrows — the reset
What happens between arrows matters almost as much as what happens during them. A 30-arrow Vegas round produces 29 between-arrow intervals, and what an archer does with those intervals has a measurable effect on what the next arrow does.
The most common between-arrow error is carrying the last shot into the next one — specifically, carrying a bad shot. An archer who shoots a 9, spends the walk to the target thinking about the 9, nocks the next arrow thinking about the 9, and begins the pre-shot routine thinking about the 9 has not reset. They are shooting the next arrow with the previous arrow's aftermath still running in the foreground. The 9 is gone. It cannot be fixed. The only arrow available for improvement is the current one.
Effective between-arrow reset has three phases:
Read. After the shot, while the bow arm is still up and the follow-through is complete, take one second to read the information the arrow gave you. Where did it land? What did the shot feel like? This is the only useful thing the previous shot can give you — one data point for one potential correction. Capture it quickly.
Release. Consciously let the previous shot go before walking to the target. Some archers use a physical gesture — lowering the bow, taking a breath, a specific thing they do that marks the end of that shot's mental life. The gesture does not matter. The decision to close the file on that arrow does. Whatever score it was, it has already been counted. It is data now, not an emergency.
Reset. Arrive at the next arrow as a neutral, fresh shooter. One thought maximum carried forward from the previous arrow — the one correction the data suggested, if any. Not a list. Not a review. One thing. Then run the routine from the trigger and let the next shot be its own event.
An archer who can do this consistently across 30 arrows under pressure has a significant advantage over an archer who cannot. The ability to reset is as trainable as the shot itself — and it is almost never deliberately trained.
Self-talk — what works and what backfires
Archers talk to themselves constantly during competition. Most of it is either accidentally harmful or accidentally neutral. Almost none of it is deliberately designed.
Research on competitive archers identifies several self-talk patterns that consistently help and several that consistently hurt:
Instructional self-talk works for technical cues. A short, specific process cue — "pull," "settle," "hold" — has measurable positive effects on execution for well-learned skills. It keeps external focus in place and crowds out the inspector. The key word is short. One to three words, not a sentence.
Motivational self-talk works for arousal management. "I've got this," "stay in it," "one arrow at a time" — these are not technical instructions but they help with arousal and confidence, particularly before the round or between ends rather than during the shot sequence itself. Research on Olympic archers specifically notes that positive self-talk is one of the most consistently used pre-competition mental strategies at elite level.
Negative self-talk does measurable damage. "Don't miss," "don't punch it," "don't let the pin move" — these are all instructions to not do the thing the brain now immediately thinks about doing. The psychological phenomenon is called the ironic process: trying to suppress a thought makes it more active, not less. An archer thinking "don't punch it" has put punching it at the center of their attention. The correct replacement is not its negative — it is a completely different thought. Not "don't punch it" but "pull all the way through."
Outcome-focused self-talk during the shot is almost always harmful. "If I miss this I drop below 285" — at full draw, this is not useful information and it is not recoverable from in the two seconds before the shot breaks. Outcome thinking belongs between arrows, briefly, as information for reset. It does not belong inside the shot sequence.
The scrutiny test — is your shot actually bulletproof?
Here is a drill worth building into your practice rotation, and it is one of the more honest things you can do with your shot.
Pick a session — not a scored round, just a form session — and deliberately over-scrutinize every component of your shot with maximum conscious attention. Watch your finger. Think specifically about your grip pressure while you are at full draw. Pay attention to your release hand during the shot. Notice your bow arm in detail. Inspect every part of the process, consciously, while executing.
Then watch what happens.
If your shot survives the scrutiny — if the arrows still land where they should, if the shot still feels like your shot — that is useful information. The skill is genuinely automated. The inspector cannot touch it. Competition will try to turn on exactly this kind of conscious scrutiny, and your shot is ready for it.
If your shot falls apart — if suddenly nothing feels right, if arrows scatter, if the release breaks down — that is also useful information. Possibly more useful. What broke tells you precisely what is not yet automatic. The part that failed under scrutiny is the part that is still being held together by routine and the absence of attention. Competition will find exactly that part, because competition turns on the spotlight whether you want it to or not.
Competition does not find weaknesses you don't have. It finds weaknesses that are already there and haven't been tested yet. The scrutiny drill breaks the shot in practice instead of at the tournament. That is the trade you want.
The drill has a second use beyond diagnosis. Running it repeatedly — scrutinizing the shot, letting it break, rebuilding it under scrutiny — trains the skill to be attention-resistant. You are rehearsing the exact experience competition produces, but in a consequence-free environment. Each time the shot survives inspection, the automation goes a little deeper. Each time it breaks and you fix it, you have identified and closed a gap that competition would have opened instead.
This is called stress inoculation training in sport psychology research. Meta-analyses across precision sports confirm that systematic exposure to the conditions that cause failure — including attentional disruption — produces measurable resilience to those conditions in competition. The mechanism is not mysterious: you are making the threatening thing familiar, until it stops being threatening.
Building the mental game in practice
The mistake most archers make is treating the mental game as something that shows up at tournaments. It does not. It shows up in whatever state you have built it in practice, or it does not show up at all.
The pre-shot routine has to be run identically on the first blank-bale arrow of a Tuesday practice as on arrow 29 of a Vegas Shoot. Not approximately. Identically. An archer who runs a loose version of their routine in practice and expects a tight version at the tournament is expecting something that was never built. You perform what you rehearsed.
Between-arrow reset needs to be practiced in practice. Most archers do not bother — they just nock and shoot, especially at blank bale. But the reset is a skill, and it degrades under pressure exactly the way shot mechanics do if it was never trained. Every session is an opportunity to practice the reset, including the sessions where nothing goes wrong. Practicing the reset when nothing goes wrong is what makes it available when something does.
Competition simulation is the bridge. Scored practice, witness scoring, consequence games, league shooting, shoot-offs — anything that creates genuine stakes on individual arrows. The gap between practice performance and competition performance narrows in direct proportion to how often you practice with real consequences attached. An archer who has never shot an arrow that matters will not suddenly be comfortable shooting an arrow that matters at a tournament.
One practical target per session: pick one mental skill to work on, the same way you pick one mechanical element. Not "be more focused." Something specific: run the full pre-shot trigger on every arrow today, or reset completely before each arrow and don't carry the previous shot forward, or keep all self-talk to process cues only. One thing. Track whether you did it.
What this actually looks like at a competition
For an archer who has done this work deliberately, a competition round looks like this from the inside:
Before the round: a specific warm-up routine, the same one every tournament. Not just shooting arrows — running the full shot routine, checking that the trigger fires cleanly, setting the expected arousal level. The warm-up is not just physical preparation. It is establishing the familiar environment before the round begins.
During the round, between ends: controlled breathing. Brief read of the previous end — what was the one thing to adjust, if anything. Then neutral. Not thinking about the running score, not calculating what's needed. Present. The score will be what the arrows make it.
During each arrow: trigger fires, routine runs, external focus on process. No inspection. If the inspector arrives — and it will, especially on a big arrow — the routine runs anyway, because the routine runs regardless. That is what ten thousand repetitions of the same sequence buys you.
After a bad arrow: one second to read it, one decision about what to adjust, then the file closes. The next arrow has nothing to do with the previous one. They are separate events.
After a good end: same reset. Good ends produce complacency the same way bad ends produce recovery pressure. Both are mental states. Neither is the shot.
The archer who can stay in that state across 30 arrows — who the tournament cannot move off of process focus, who the inspector cannot find a seat in — is the archer whose competition score matches their practice score. That is not a personality type. It is a trained skill. It takes the same kind of deliberate, intentional work to build as any other part of the shot.
