Follow-through is the continuation of the forces, movements, and holding patterns that occurred before and during the shot. Nothing added. Nothing changed. What you were doing when the arrow left is what you are still doing when the arrow hits the bale.
That is the whole definition.
Now ask yourself honestly: does your follow-through meet that definition? Or are you performing one?
The most faked thing in archery
Watch a group of archers shoot. After the shot breaks, most of them do something. The release hand moves — backward, or sideways, into a practiced position. The bow dips forward, the stabilizer tips toward the target. It looks purposeful. It looks like technique.
Some of it is faked.
An archer collapses at the break, grips through the shot, releases early — and then, after the arrow has already left, deliberately performs a follow-through. The shot was already over. The follow-through is a costume. By the definition above, it is not follow-through at all. It is a new movement added after the fact.
The problem is that faking a follow-through is easy, and it feels convincing. Coaches watch for it. Archers coach themselves into it. They focus so much on what happens after the break that the follow-through becomes its own sequence — a thing to execute instead of something that happens on its own when the shot was right.
Follow-through is not a sequence. It is a continuation.
What that actually looks like
If follow-through is continuation, then what you see after the shot is determined by what happened during it.
The release arm. After a clean release built on back tension, the draw elbow drives back and around — past the line of the shot, toward the wall behind you. Some coaches cue this as peeling the shoulder blade across the spine. Where the hand ends up is a useful indicator: drifting toward the ear or cheekbone means back tension was engaged through the break. A hand that drops to the hip or swings wide means something tensed or released early. The release arm is not doing something new. It is finishing the movement back tension already started.
The bow arm. During the shot, the bow arm is pointed at the target under load. After the shot, it is still pointed at the target. The wrist should be relaxed — not because relaxation is a technique to perform after the fact, but because a rigid wrist during the shot torques the riser. If the wrist was relaxed during the shot, the bow arm after the shot looks exactly like a bow arm that was relaxed during the shot. It does not change. It continues.
Common faults — and what they actually tell you
These are not follow-through faults. They are shot faults that show up in the follow-through. That distinction matters.
Gripping the bow. Introduces torque during the shot. Shows up as inconsistent horizontal groups and a bow that does not move freely after the break.
Collapsing the bow arm. Usually a flinch or learned anticipation at the break. The arrow is still on the rest when this happens. The follow-through looks like the bow arm dropping — but that drop started before the shot was clean.
Freezing the release arm. The draw-side movement stops at the release point. A frozen arm means the shot was held or tensed at the break instead of released through back tension. The follow-through reveals it immediately.
Follow-through is honest. It cannot tell you something good happened during the shot if something bad did. But it also cannot be coached in isolation. Fix the shot, and the follow-through fixes itself.
The advice that never helps
Coaches say it at every range, to every archer, at every level: work on your follow-through. Your follow-through looks terrible. Focus on your follow-through.
It is not wrong exactly. The follow-through is where the problems show up. But it is also the least useful thing to say, because the follow-through is not the problem. It is the symptom. You cannot fix a symptom. You can perform one. You can train yourself to execute a practiced movement after the shot that looks like follow-through while the actual upstream problem — the grip, the collapse, the tensed release — sits completely untouched.
This is not a criticism of coaches. The coach can see the follow-through. It is right there — the bow dropping, the hand moving wrong, the shot falling apart at the break. Of course they point at it. It is the only thing visible from the outside. The problem is that the root cause is often not visible from the outside. It is somewhere deeper in the shot, sometimes so deep inside the archer that the coach cannot see it at all. The coach identifies the symptom because that is what observation allows. But naming the symptom is not the same as finding the cause, and cueing the follow-through is not the same as fixing the shot.
The upstream problem is somewhere in the shot. Finding it is the work. A coach can help point toward it, but they cannot find it for you. It is yours to find.
One day it clicks. One day the upstream problem becomes obvious, the shot unlocks, and the follow-through takes care of itself. Every archer who has had that moment will tell you the same thing: it felt a little stupid, because the advice they had been hearing for years was pointing at the wrong thing the entire time.
The Axial method
Drive the stabilizer toward the target. During the shot, the bow arm is pushing toward the target, the stabilizer is pointed at the target, the whole system is oriented forward and stable. The Axial follow-through is that — continued. The stabilizer stays pointed at the target after the shot the same way it was pointed at the target during the shot.
A forced forward roll is not the continuation of that. During the shot, no one is initiating a forward and down movement. The bow arm is holding up, pushing forward. A follow-through that rolls the stabilizer well past vertical is a new movement — something added after the fact, not carried forward from the shot. By the definition this article opened with, that is not follow-through.
Drive the stabilizer at the target. Hold it there. That is the continuation of a well-executed shot, and that is what Axial coaches.
