Full draw. The pin is moving. Not drifting — moving. It swings up toward center, overshoots into the nine at twelve o'clock, comes back, skids through the middle without stopping, settles somewhere in the eight at six. You push it up. It overshoots again. You try to hold it still but still is not available, so you wait for the pin to pass through the middle and you try to fire at the exact instant it does. Your timing is slightly off. The arrow hits the nine at three o'clock. You step off the line, roll your shoulder, and think: I need to work on my float.

You don't need to work on your float.

What you described is not pin float. Pin float is a mechanical phenomenon — the slow, low-frequency oscillation a human body produces while holding a heavy object at full extension. It is, by the research, under 3 Hz. Three complete cycles per second, maximum. In practice, for a trained archer in a stable hold, it runs closer to 1 to 2 Hz — one full swing and return every half second to a full second.

That is slow. Slower than most archers imagine. At two inches of movement at 2 Hz, the pin is traveling at roughly four inches per second. You can track that. You can hold a sight picture inside that. A skilled archer shooting inside pin-float-only variation should be able to place the pin in a small zone and fire inside it with something close to reliability.

If your pin is moving faster than that — buzzing, oscillating, bouncing end to end while you try to intercept it — that is not what physics put there.

Something else did.

The mind trying to help

The first thing the mind does is correct. The pin is off-center, so the mind sends a signal to move it. The signal arrives late — perception, processing, and motor execution take time — so by the time the correction fires, the pin has already moved on. The correction overshoots. The mind sends a signal to correct the overshoot. That one overshoots too, in the other direction, and now the cycle is running.

Each correction is chasing information that's already stale. The pin you saw at nine o'clock when you started correcting is not where it is when the correction arrives. You are steering with a delay built into the system that no amount of focus can remove. The harder you try, the more corrections you generate, and the more corrections you generate, the faster the oscillation runs.

What this looks like from the outside: a pin orbiting the center without landing in it.

What it feels like from the inside: aiming is work. Effortful, tiring, unsatisfying work. The pin feels repelled from the center. Every archer who has experienced this describes it that way — it goes everywhere except the middle — and the description is accurate. The pin goes everywhere except the middle because every time it approaches the middle, the correction cycle pushes it out again.

The skill that resolves this is not better correction. It is the ability to stop correcting — to let the pin be near the middle without immediately trying to move it to the middle. That distinction sounds simple. It is not a simple skill. Most archers discover, when they first try it, that they have no idea how to aim without steering. The steering has been aiming for so long they've forgotten they're doing it.

The urgency that arrives uninvited

The second mechanism is less visible and does more damage.

Somewhere during the hold — at a different point for every archer, but reliably somewhere — something arrives that is not quite a thought and not quite a feeling. A pressure. A sense that the shot should happen soon. That the window is closing. That the hold has gone on long enough and now is the time.

This pressure is not generated by the situation. It is generated by the nervous system, which has learned — across thousands of draws — that something uncomfortable is coming. The body prepares. Attention narrows. The muscles make small adjustments that were not asked for. And the correction cycle, already running too fast, accelerates. Because now there is urgency, and urgency makes the steering sharper and the overshoot worse.

The result is the shot you recognize: pin swinging through center, pressure to fire, trigger pulled at the moment of maximum urgency rather than maximum alignment. The arrow goes somewhere in the yellow. You felt the pin pass through. Close enough.

On a good day you call it inconsistency. On a bad day you think about quitting.

The shot broke when the pressure peaked, not when the aim was right. These are not the same moment, and the body knows the difference even when the score doesn't show it yet.

What you've been blaming it on

Draw weight. Form breakdown. A peep that's slightly out of position. Your grip, your anchor, the length of your hold, the fact that you're tired. The fact that you weren't tired enough, and should practice more. The bow. The rest. The scope.

Some of these have been changed. A few of them helped, briefly. The problem returned wearing different clothes.

Here is the discriminating test. At blank bale — no target, no spot, nothing to aim at — does your hold feel different? Does the pin settle? Does the urgency arrive?

For most archers running the correction cycle and the urgency together, blank bale feels calm. Because the cue that sets everything in motion is not the bow, not the hold, not the physical position of the body. It is the center. The sight of a target, a ring, an X — anything to aim at — loads the machinery. Take away the thing to aim at and the machinery idles. The pin sits quiet. The hold is fine.

This tells you something specific: your bow is not the problem. Your body is not the problem. What changed between the blank bale and the target was your mind's relationship to the center of the target face.

The thing that's actually happening

The correction cycle is the mechanism. And here is how you know it.

Almost every archer has had the other shot. You come to full draw and the pin is already there — not drifting in, not arriving, just parked in the middle. Steady. You hold it for a moment and it stays. Your coach, if they saw it, might tell you to stop and think about what was different that time.

Sometimes there's a small mechanical answer. A slightly better grip. A cleaner anchor. But often the honest answer is simpler: the correction never started. The pin happened to settle near center at the moment your shoulders locked. Because there was nothing to correct, you didn't correct anything. No first correction meant no overshoot. No overshoot meant no second correction chasing the first. The cascade had no trigger and never ran.

That draw, you shot true pin float — calm, slow, well under 3 Hz — because you were never chasing. It wasn't luck that you held steady. It was the absence of the thing that makes you unsteady.

The correction cycle is not a permanent feature of your shot. It begins when the pin is off-center at full draw and you correct — and once it begins, it escalates. But it is not inevitable. When the pin lands near center at draw and you never make the first correction, the cascade never starts. The shot you've been trying to make is the one where that cascade doesn't begin — and you have shot it. You've felt it. You just didn't know what made it different.

Biomechanics says your pin should oscillate at under 3 Hz. Yours runs faster than that. The gap between what physics allows and what you're experiencing is the evidence. That gap does not live in your equipment, your draw weight, or your form. It lives in a loop your nervous system learned and has not yet been asked to unlearn.

There is a name for this. It is one of archery's most recognized and most avoided terms, because the word attached to it sounds like a clinical breakdown. Like a category reserved for archers who can be seen flinching from across the room.

The name is target panic. And its most honest definition — the one that strips away the clinical scaffolding and says what it actually does — is this:

Target panic prevents you from hitting where you want to hit. That is the whole definition. Not a flinch, not a freeze, not a technique failure visible on video. Just: the pin ends up somewhere other than where you aimed, more often than biomechanics can explain. If that sentence describes your shooting — even occasionally, even only at distance, even only when it matters — you have a version of it.

What's described in this article — the correction cycle, the urgency, the pin that orbits center without landing — is the classic presentation of target panic known as the chaser. It is the most common form, the one most likely to be mistaken for a mechanical problem, and the one most archers carry without knowing what to call it.

It is also very likely that everyone has some level of it. Not every archer has the same severity — the chaser exists on a spectrum from barely perceptible to genuinely debilitating — but the correction impulse, the faint urgency at full draw, the pin that moves a little faster than physics says it should: that experience is nearly universal. The archer on the next bale who looks calm and shoots clean either has less of it, is managing it, or hasn't yet shot the distance or the pressure where theirs surfaces. The isolation that comes with this — the private certainty that your pin float is uniquely bad and that nobody else understands — is one of the condition's consistent features, and it is consistently wrong.

What comes next

Naming it does not fix it. But it routes the work correctly.

The archer who calls this pin float will spend seasons tuning a bow that isn't the problem. The archer who calls it a form issue will rebuild a form that wasn't breaking. The archer who calls it what it is has a diagnosis that points toward an intervention — and the interventions for this specific condition are not the same as the interventions for group scatter or inconsistent anchor or draw weight mismatch.

The correction cycle is trained out by learning to hold without steering — which is uncomfortable, counterintuitive, and initially makes the pin picture look worse. The urgency is addressed by changing the relationship between draw and shot, which involves getting the shot to break without the conscious mind authorizing it at the moment of maximum pressure.

None of this is done by trying harder. The trying is part of the loop. It is the load-bearing element on the wrong side of the problem.

The first step is accurate recognition. Not "my pin won't sit still." Something more specific: my pin moves faster than biomechanics says it should, and the word for what's causing that is target panic, and I have some version of it, and it is treatable.

That sentence is harder to say than it looks. Say it anyway.
