The wrist sling solves a specific problem. The problem is that new compound archers are afraid of dropping the bow.
That fear is reasonable. A compound bow is expensive, it is heavy, and the shot feels violent when you are not used to it. The bow wants to go somewhere at the break. You are not sure where. The wrist sling is the answer to "I don't know what happens if I let go." It catches whatever happens. You relax your grip. The arrow goes where it's supposed to go. Problem solved.
This is a completely legitimate use of a wrist sling. This is what it is for.
The question worth asking is whether you still have that problem.
The two-state proof
A wrist sling is either making contact with your wrist or it isn't. There is no in-between that matters mechanically.
If it has any meaningful tension against your wrist during the shot, it is applying a lateral force to the front of the riser. That force torques the bow. How much depends on how much tension, but the direction is consistent and the effect is real. You can test this in about ten seconds — apply tension, feel the riser, notice the torque. Release the tension, feel the riser again. The torque disappears when the contact disappears.
If it's not touching your wrist — loose, slack, only there to catch the bow after the arrow is gone — then it isn't doing anything mechanical during the shot. It's not providing stability. It's not reducing grip pressure. It is not keeping the bow from falling. It is hanging there.
Those are the only two options. Tension means torque. Slack means nothing. So the question becomes: which one are you doing?
What compound bows actually do at the break
Recurve bows are springy. They store energy in bent limbs and release it at the shot, and a meaningful portion of that release goes forward — the bow wants to move toward the target, and without something to stop it, it will. This is why recurve archers develop a specific forward roll technique. The bow is going somewhere, and the technique accounts for that. A wrist sling on a recurve is doing a physical job.
Modern compound bows don't behave this way. The limbs are nearly parallel at full draw. The cam system smooths the energy curve and channels it into the arrow rather than into riser movement. The forward kick at the break is minimal. After the shot, a compound bow is just a bow sitting in your hand.
It was already sitting in your hand. You were holding it. The string moved. That's it.
Where the thumb actually goes
On a compound riser, the grip sits partway up the riser and the riser continues past it — upward and slightly offset. Where the grip ends and the riser transitions, there is a natural step in the geometry. The thumb lands there, settling into the crook where the riser offsets above the grip material. Call it a thumb shelf if you want a name for it, but what it really is is a consequence of riser geometry rather than a dedicated feature. It's just where the thumb goes when you hold the bow correctly, and it happens to be a consistent and repeatable position that doesn't require active maintenance.
A correct compound hold looks roughly like this: the grip contacts the heel of the palm, the thumb settles into that riser offset above it, the fingers wrap lightly with just enough contact to keep the bow seated. The bow is held the way you'd hold something you'd prefer not to drop — present, not clenched.
With that hold, the bow doesn't fall. The riser offset captures the thumb from above. The heel of the palm supports the weight from below. The bow has no clear path to the floor without a deliberate effort to send it there.
Recurve bows have a version of the same geometry — the riser continues above the grip there too, and there is a similar transition point. But the technique is deliberately different. A recurve grip is set up to be loose at the wrist, oriented to let the bow travel forward on the shot. The forward roll is part of the shot. On a compound, the bow is heavier, the energy delivery is smoother, and the riser doesn't kick the same way at the break. The grip can be slightly more present without introducing problems — not firmer, just less intentionally absent. The sling that makes physical sense on a recurve doesn't translate directly to the same function on a compound, because the bow and the technique are both different.
Are elite archers actually using them?
There are elite compound archers who shoot with a wrist sling. This is true. The question is not whether they own one — the question is what it's doing during the shot.
If the sling is slack during the shot, the answer is: nothing. It's a habit. It got packed with the bag, it got attached at the range, and at some point the archer stopped thinking about whether it was contributing. It probably isn't. It's along for the ride.
If the sling has tension — actually touching the wrist with force during the shot — then we're back to the torque question. Is that torque consistent? Probably. Is consistent torque better than no torque? No. Consistent torque means the shot has been built around a systematic bias. The archer has compensated for it, and it's working, but the sling is contributing something it shouldn't be.
The honest version of the question when you see an elite archer with a wrist sling is: if you took it off right now, would anything change? If the answer is no, it wasn't helping. If the answer is yes, it was introducing something it shouldn't have been.
The stop sign hold
The other end of this is the archer who uses a wrist sling because they are doing a stop sign hold — palm out, fingers spread, bow riding the palm like a serving platter. This hold is not elite form. It is also not wrong for a beginner trying to avoid gripping the bow. But it is a stage, not a destination.
The stop sign hold works until you are holding a nine-pound target bow at full draw in a tournament with forty minutes of shooting left. At that point it stops working. The arm gets tired. The hold drifts. The bow gets heavy. The sling starts to take some of that load, which is not what a sling is for, and the bow starts to fall onto the sling at the break, which is not comfortable, which compounds the problem.
If a wrist sling feels necessary at the elite level, the first question is whether the hold is correct — not whether the sling should stay. A correct hold with thumb contact on the shelf removes the conditions that make a sling feel needed. The sling is treating a symptom. The hold is the cause.
What to do with this
If you are new and the choice is between a death grip and a wrist sling, use the sling. Without question. The death grip creates torque. The sling breaks the anxiety that creates the death grip. It is doing its job and it should be there.
If you have been shooting long enough that your grip is light and consistent on its own, put the sling down for a practice session and see what happens. If nothing changes — if the bow stays in your hand, if the shots go the same places, if you never think about it — you've outgrown it.
If something changes when you remove it, the sling was compensating for something. The answer is to find what it was compensating for and fix that. Not to put the sling back.
Most archers who have used a sling for more than a year have never run this test. They put it on when they started, it became part of the routine, and they haven't thought about it since. That might be fine. The sling might be doing nothing except sitting on their wrist. But they don't know, because they haven't checked.
