You have shot a clean eight ends without thinking about the score. Not because you're disciplined — you just didn't need to. You have been very carefully not thinking about the score, which is its own kind of thinking about it. The round was running on its own.

Then somebody says it out loud.

They mean well. They almost certainly mean well. They look at the scorecard with that flat, helpful look, say "you're clean, by the way," and something happens in your chest that has nothing to do with archery.

From that moment, the job changed. Not for the bow. The bow does not know. The bow is having exactly the same Tuesday it was having twenty minutes ago. You draw, and the shot feels like it's being executed by a committee. But for you, the round shifted from shoot the shot to don't be the person who broke it — and only one of those is something your hands can execute. (You said thanks. The next arrow was a nine.)

The hot hand: a forty-year argument you’ve been enrolled in without your consent

You will meet someone at a shoot who has a strong opinion about whether streaks are real. They'll tell you the hot hand is a proven myth, or that the myth got debunked. They're each half right, and the disagreement is about basketball, and somehow it is now relevant to your clean round.

There are two completely separate questions hiding inside "hot hand," and archery routinely conflates them.

Question one: are streaks statistically real? In 1985, Gilovich, Vallone and Tversky analyzed NBA shooting data and found no evidence of streak shooting — hit rate after a hit was, if anything, marginally lower. This became "the hot hand fallacy" and spread through popular writing as settled science.

In 2018, Miller and Sanjurjo published a correction in Econometrica. The standard methodology has a built-in downward bias in finite sequences: using a hit to define the "after a hit" subset leaves that subset slightly hit-poor before anyone shoots. It's a mathematical artifact. Correct for it, they argued, and the original data contains significant evidence of streak shooting.

Confident claim that streaks are an illusion: not safe. Confident claim that they're real: also not safe. This is an unresolved argument between serious people, and it's about basketball. Nobody has run the corrected analysis on archery scoring sequences. Whether your streak is statistically real is genuinely unknown.

Question two: what happens when you notice one? This one has a clear answer, and it's the one that matters.

Noticing the streak converts the round from a sequence of independent shots into a state you are now responsible for maintaining. Whatever the arrows are doing statistically, your attention is now correlated with a number — and your attention was the only thing in this arrangement doing useful work.

You don't need to know whether streaks are real to know that noticing one changes you. One is a question about arrows. The other is a question about you, and you already have the data.

Protection mode is bad at archery

Psychologists describe two modes of goal pursuit. Promotion focus is oriented toward gains — you're reaching, strategy is eager, a near-miss is recoverable. Prevention focus is oriented around not losing — you're protecting something, strategy is vigilant, an error is a catastrophe.

Prevention focus is excellent at catching cracked nocks and reading wind flags. It is terrible at executing a shot process that runs better without supervision.

When you get ahead, the focus flips automatically, without permission. Listen to your own inner voice. Promotion sounds like: pull through, let it go, put it in the middle. Prevention sounds like: careful now — don't drop it low left like the fifth end — hold it, just make sure, we're so close.

That second voice is not weakness and it is not wanting it too much. It is a perfectly sensible strategy for protecting an asset, deployed against a task it cannot help with. It is the centipede from Part 1 being asked which leg goes next, six ends into a winning streak.

"Don't miss" is not a target

Every protective instruction has the same structural defect: negative goals cannot be converted into motor commands.

"Put it in the middle" describes a place. Coordinates. Your visual and motor system can organize around it.

"Don't drop one out" describes an enormous region of space defined by not being somewhere specific. There is no such thing as aiming at not-low-left. Your brain, handed a goal it cannot convert into movement, does the only thing available: it starts inspecting the machinery. If you can't aim at the goal, you supervise the process. Supervision at least feels like something.

Every cue word you carry onto the line must name something to do, not something to avoid. "Elbow through." "Pull the wall apart." Not "don't punch it." Not "make sure." Self-talk research (Hatzigeorgiadis et al., 2011, d ≈ 0.48) confirms instructional beats motivational for fine motor tasks. "COME ON" raises arousal. Archery does not need more arousal.

The last arrow

5–3 up. Two arrows in, eighteen on the board. One arrow left.

You can't win the set — twenty-eight is out of reach. But a ten ties it, which is a set point, which is the match. So you need a ten. Not to win. To tie. The sport has, for twenty seconds, removed partial credit and become a penalty kick. And every protective instinct in your nervous system just voted.

DeCaro et al. (2011) showed that outcome pressure and monitoring pressure are different stressors that disrupt different tasks. Outcome pressure (what's at stake) pulls attention away from the task, toward the stakes. Monitoring pressure (everyone watching, the judge two meters away) pushes it back onto the mechanics. One arrow, both at once, pulling in opposite directions. That's what it feels like, and now you know why.

What to do:

A process goal that doesn't change with the scoreline. The test is simple: would this sentence be different if you were losing? If yes, it's not a process goal — it's a scoreboard reaction wearing a coaching cue's clothes. "Expand through" passes. "Make this one count" doesn't.

Put your eyes somewhere specific before you draw. Quiet eye — the final sustained fixation before execution — is the strongest evidence in this series (Lebeau et al., 2016, moderate-to-large effect; Gonzalez et al., 2017, archery-specific data showing experts hold it nearly three times longer than novices). Under a lead, gaze discipline is the first casualty. And the expert advantage is in the onset, not the duration — commit earlier, before the bow comes up, not when the pin arrives.

Practice being ahead. You practice being behind constantly — every bad arrow in training is a free repetition of recovering from failure. You almost never practice being ahead, because in training it isn't a state. Manufacture it: run mock sets from a fictional 5–3 lead, have someone announce your streak out loud on purpose, make a clean round cost something real when it breaks. The first time a training partner does this to you it is genuinely unpleasant. That discomfort is the training effect — not a side effect of it.

One more reframe for the last arrow. It's “last” only in the scoreboard's accounting. Call it arrow one of the next end — the first arrow of the shoot-off, if you need a frame that helps. A first arrow has no history, no accumulated weight. Your nervous system is going to disagree, loudly. But your inner monologue can give it better instructions than the scoreboard is currently providing.

If you shoot compound: stop counting X's before the last end. Cover the column or ask your scorer not to announce them out loud. X-count is the finest discrimination in the sport, the thing most worth not thinking about — and it lives in its own column so you cannot possibly avoid thinking about it. A compound archer who drops to a 10 has lost; one whose 10 isn't an X has also lost, just more quietly, and they've invented an error class that costs zero points but still consumes bandwidth. (Stop counting the X column. You are counting the X column.) Your next arrow does not know what the last one scored.

A streak is not a debt

Sometimes a worse thought arrives alongside the good round: I'm due.

Nineteen X's, and something starts tallying up an obligation the universe is about to collect. This is the gambler's fallacy, and here at least the statistics are not in dispute: your arrows do not remember. There is no account being balanced. No running tab. The universe does not audit your X count.

What can be true — and is far more boring and more fixable: you might be fading. Tired, hold shortening, back talking about two hours of use. That produces a real decline — but it shows up in your body, not your luck. Ask: is there anything physically different about the last three shots, or only something different about how I feel about them? One is information. The other is weather.
